Teacher and Tech Sept. 14

MetaTeachnition - a new word (that I made up) for you to know. It means to think about your (or anyone else's) teaching and what is going on in terms of the you, the students, the classroom environment, your lesson, etc.
   This is what you should be constantly doing now - focus especially on the people/ideas/organizations that are different from your experience. Do not judge them, learn from them!

Cell phone/laptop etiquette -- wireless?

No textbook, but you might want an iTouch or similar wireless device (strongly recommended)

Grading standards - the search for extraordinary.

What is education?
  • What are schools for? What is education? Why are you here? What do you hope to accomplish with your students?
  • Write down a one or two sentence response
  • Share with one other person and modify/revise if you wish
  • Share with another pair of people
  • What do some 'experts' say? Audio excerpt from TVO - The Agenda
Do the 'experts' change your mind? Which of their definitions do you like best?
Does Sir Ken Robinson’s TED talk change your mind or is he dreaming?

Create google account if you don’t have one. Professional names please!!
    You do not have to use gmail! This account gives you access to many other things
Visit class blog and wiki - read/watch/listen
Citation Sites - BibMe, EasyBib, RefWorks (via UofM library site)

The difference between blogs, wikis and web sites.
Create a wiki/web site - professional name!!! Pros and cons of pbworks, wikispaces, weebly, google sites, etc

What has happened with the school system in New Orleans since this Paul Tough interview?

And can models such as chartered and the kip schools be implemented in Canada or parts of them be used within our own school system?
